2. Class Web Site
This class has a web site that will be an essential part of the
class activities. Use any web browser to access this URL:

site at http://www.sac.edu but you cannot get to our class
web site from there.
3. Catalog Description of Course
Web Development using the Visual Basic programming language. Students
will use Visual Basic, Active X controls and ASP to develop Internet
applications such as Web browsers and databases.
4. Course Textbook

Murach's ASP.NET web programming with VB.NET
by Doug Lowe and Anne Prince

Available in campus bookstore.
5. Classroom Protocol
- Students for this class will need to sign a statement that they will
comply with the
Standards of Conduct for Computer Classrooms and Computer Labs,
as posted on our class web site.

You may tape record my lecture if you get my prior permission.

Please turn off all pagers and cell phones during class. If you are
on-call for an emergency, please notify the instructor at the start
of class.

I will give out points for answering questions in class. I find that
this improves the learning process but it is not as fair as an exam
where everyone answers the same questions. Therefore answering
questions in class is purely extra-credit. You can get a perfect
score without answering any questions in class.
6. Homework and required LAB hour/week
-
Homework will be assigned regularly which you are expected to
work on in the A104/A108 lab at least one hour per week.
Students must follow all regulations
for using the lab. Hours of lab availability will be posted.

Students may also do some or all of their class work on an outside
computer (e.g. a home PC). The instructor reserves the right to
decide if your outside computer is suitable for class assignments.

During the semester, I may demonstrate how it is possible (as an
optional exercise) to install software on a home computer. This
class does not require that you install any software on any outside
computers. If you choose to do so, it is totally at your own risk
and not a required part of this class.
WARNING WARNING WARNING
Students using an outside computer are totally responsible for
any problems, damage, viruses, corruption, or loss of data that
may result, even if the student was doing assigned class work.
This college can not help you reinstall nor recover files, data,
operating system, etc. If in doubt, use the college lab
computers instead of an outside computer.

7. Attendance and Grading Policy
Your overall grade for this course will be computed as follows
3 % attendance (see details below)
47 % homework
20 % in-class Final Exam
30 % two take-home quizzes each worth 15%
3 % extra-credit bonus for Answering questions in class

Attendance grading:
- attendance will be taken at 9 PM
- no credit if you leave before 9 PM
- Up to 3 absences will be ignored i.e. not counted
(You can get a perfect attendance grade if you miss from
0 to 3 classes, but not if you miss 4 classes.)
Letter grades are based on the following course points scale
93 and up A (Note 93 points are required to get an A)
80 and up B
70 and up C
60 and up D
below 60 F
The reason that 93 points are required to get an A (instead of 90) is
that on most homework and quizzes, I allow students to correct errors
and resubmit their work (multiple times if needed) to improve their score.
If you miss more than 3 classes in the semester, you may be dropped
no matter what your current grade. Since this drop is not automatic,
if you stop attending, you must take action to
drop this class before the deadline or you will get a poor or
failing grade.
Do not contact the instructor to drop this class or
take it Credit/No Credit as you must contact Admissions yourself for
these purposes.
8. Exam and Quiz Policy
-
If you are absent for the in-class Final Exam, check the class web
site to see if
and when a make-up exam is available. There will be a 4 percent penalty
for taking a make-up exam, no matter what the reason, e.g. your
make-up exam score of 92% would be reduced to 88%.
Exception, if
you schedule the make-up exam with me 7 days before the
regularly
scheduled
in-class Final Exam, the 4% penalty will be waived.

If you miss both the exam and the make-up exam, you will get a
zero for that exam and will not be able to take a make-up exam.
If you have a scheduling conflict, please see the instructor
in advance.

Quizzes will be take-home. They will be available on the class web
site and you may do them in the school labs or at home if your
Internet access allows you to do the Web homework there.

Exams and quizzes will have 40 questions to answer in one hour.
They will be open-note, open-book. You may use other programs or
a battery-powered laptop. You may not share any items or consult
with another student during the exam or quizzes.
Exams are proctored, in-class and you may only take the exam once.
Quizzes are take-home and give you your score immediately.
You may re-take each quiz to improve your score as often as you like,
but the questions will change each time you re-take the quiz.
Only your best one hour quiz result will be counted (i.e. it never
hurts to try taking the quiz another time).
Quizzes are not proctored. You are on your honor not to cheat. You
will have a difficult time on the Final Exam if you have not
done the quizzes on your own.

Warning: do not wait until the last minute to take a quiz. I rarely
give extensions on quiz dates and certainly will deny your request
if I have given you a quiz extension previously this semester.
9. Honesty Policy
-
A student found cheating on any exam or assignment will receive
no credit (at all) for that exam or assignment nor will that
student be allowed a second chance to do the exam or assignment.

A second instance of cheating will result in a failing grade (for
the whole course) and the student will not be allowed to drop the
course.

Do your own work. If two people turn in work that matches too closely,
both will be guilty of cheating and will receive the penalties
described above. Do not let other students copy your work.
10. Spelling, Grammar, and Following Spec

I deduct points in both homework and exams for spelling and grammar
errors, no matter how minor. In the real world, it is essential to
correct all spelling and grammar errors before you submit work to
your employer or an important client.

I deduct points in both homework and exams for not following the
specifications (i.e. the instructions), which is called the Spec
for short. If I give you an example of what your output should look
like, I will deduct points if you could have made your work look
more like my example but did not do so.

I usually check my e-mail and reply once every day or two. I
encourage you to e-mail me frequently, even with small questions.
Please make your questions as specific as possible.

The college Tutorial Learning Center is another place you may be able
to get help, depending on their staffing in various subjects. Call
them to see if they have tutors for this class and to schedule an
appointment.
12. Students with Disabilities
