CS 141 Homework Assignment #13

Most students finished this exercise in class #11 on 5/5/2008.

We are going to use VMware player which is a free product.

    right clicK: empty-vm
     left clicK: copy

go to data (e:)
 right click (in empty space)
  new
   folder
    call it cs141   (create this folder in the e: drive)
     dbl click cs141
      right click (in empty space)
       paste (to copy empty-vm here)
        it is about 1.5 MB
         there should now be an empty-vm dir under cs141

insert knoppix 5.1.1 cd into your cdrom drive
 it will auto run a browser with info about knoppix
  just close the browser window

start vmware player (that has already been installed on each
    system in A-213)
 start
  All-programs
   vmware
    vmware player


accept licensing
open
 e:
  cs141
   empty-vm
    other.vmx
     if it says vm is in use, click: take ownership
      did you move or copy it: answer copy

 VMware will start a virtual machine
  you can press F2 to go into the VMware bios
   you must click inside the VMware window before your press F2

vmware has 2 modes
 click inside so that all keystrokes and mouse movements
  are handled only by the virtual machine
   and you cannot get out of the virtual machine 

press ctrl -alt
 to leave the virtual machine
  all keystrokes and mouse are handled by windows as normal.
   (look at the bottom left for a ctrl-alt reminder) 

take a break at this point.

ctrl-alt-enter for full screen mode
 ctrl-alt-enter again to leave full screen mode

get to cmd line prompt
  gui: click console icon
  or
  ctrl-alt-f1 (hold for a while)

turn to page 754
 note there is a 6 step procedure
  to write a simple shell script
   this must be done under knoppix under vmware
    for credit for this assignment.

to get credit for this assignment
 show the instructor that you script runs
  under knoppix 
   under vmware player.
