Why take CS 141 ?

• CS 141 students will receive a version of Linux for home that runs from cdrom
• CS 141 instructor is a UNIX expert, lecturer, and published author
• CS 141 combines Internet, on-line, and traditional classroom instruction
• Each student work-station shows each instructor key stroke in real-time, so you can see how the instructor enters UNIX/Linux commands.
• An "electronic" white board captures all lecture notes, broadcasts them to each station, and posts them on the class web site.
• Instantly seeing the lecture broadcast of the key words and having them in the posted lecture notes assists when English is not your primary language.
• Homework is submitted via the Internet and graded instantly so you get immediate feedback, day or night.
• You can resubmit wrong answers until you get full credit. Your grade reflects what you learned, not how many mistakes you made initially.

Prerequisites

• You should be able to use a web browser (e.g. Windows Internet Explorer) and access sites on the Internet.
• You should be comfortable with basic DOS or Windows operations such as creating directories and copying files.
• You should have done some computer programming so that the concepts of variables, conditional execution (IF statements), and loops are not totally unfamiliar to you.
• No experience with UNIX or Linux is required for this class.
